前天法国的巴黎圣母院发生了一场大火，世界各地都对此感到深深的痛惜。本文就来聊聊和巴黎圣母院相关的英语。
01. Notre Dame Cathedral
巴黎圣母院的名字来源于法语：
- Notre-Dame de Paris
It means “Our Lady of Paris”, often referred to simply as Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral.
巴黎圣母院其实是一个大教堂，而教堂在英语里有很多不同的说法，最常见的有下面两种：
- Cathedral: 天主教堂
- Church: 教堂
“Cathedral”的规模一般比较大，指的是天主教教堂；而“Church”指的是一般性的教堂建筑。所以我们可以说“all the cathedrals are churches, but not all churches are cathedrals”。
- Catholicism /kəˈθɑlɪˌsɪzəm/: 天主教
- Christianity /ˌkrɪstʃiˈænɪti/:基督教
巴黎圣母院着火了，我们可以说：
- Be caught on fire: 着火
- A major fire erupted at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
建筑物着火了，我们需要及时的补救：
- Put out the fire: 扑火
- Rebuild: 重建
在英语里面有re前缀的单词，很多都有“do it again“的意思：
- Renew: 重新开始
- Restore: 重修
- Restart: 重启
为了重建巴黎圣母院，很多人都贡献出了自己的力量：
- Fund raise: 筹款
- Contribute money: 捐钱
- Chip in: 共同凑钱
02. A novel
即使没有去过巴黎圣母院，大家也会觉得非常揪心，因为伟大的历史和文明其实是全世界人类共同的财产：
A fire destroyed the Spire and most of the interiors of Notre Dame. The world mourns in shared sorrow. History and civilization belong to all of us.
巴黎圣母院之所以这么有名，其实跟雨果的一部小说很有关系：

- Hunchback: 驼背的人
小说中讲的是一个钟楼怪人Quasimodo与一个吉普赛女郎Esmeralda之间的故事。
